Appalachian Trail
Twenty-five miles of moderately challenging to rugged terrain. Accessible from Route 56 in Tyro and at trail crossings along the Blue Ridge Parkway: Reeds Gap/Route 664, Rockfish Gap/Afton Mountain and from Crabtree Falls trail one-half mile beyond the top of the waterfall. 800-282-8223

Crabtree Falls
Hike all or part of the 2.5 miles to the top of the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Montebello. 540-291-2188

Bicycle Touring Route

Blue Ridge Parkway
The first 30 miles of the 469-mile Parkway begin in Nelson County. A designated route on the Trans-America Bicycle Trail, it begins at Route 250 in Afton, with access from Routes 664 and 56. 540.377.2377

Tye River Memorial Park
On the Tye River, Route 56, southeast of Tyro are picnic sites, fishing and white water suitable for canoes and kayaks.

James River Wildlife Management Area
On the James River, two miles downstream from Wingina are watchable wildlife, picnic sites, hike and bike trails.

Canoe/Kayak Run
Put-in by the bridge on Route 6 and take-out at the Nelson County Wayside on Highway 29
